A dark band passes vertically through the eye, and another band runs down the front edge of the dorsal fin before bending backwards to run obliquely across the flank and onto the lower lobe of the caudal fin. In aquariums, Corydoras narcissus is a peaceful and social species that thrives in groups. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water conditions and are known for their bottom-dwelling behaviour. To provide a comfortable habitat for them, a sandy substrate is recommended, as they use their barbels to search for food in the substrate. Long-nosed Skunk Corys are omnivores, so their diet should include a mix of high-quality pellets, live or frozen foods, and vegetable matter.

Females are less strongly marked; the band through the eye is indistinct and the markings on the body are more irregular smudges than clear bands. Corydoras julii and Corydoras trilineatus are very similar and frequently confused by both hobbyists and retailers. Both have a pale silvery-white body with a pattern of fine black spots on the flanks including a neat row along the midline of the fish bordered with white and running from behind the gill cover to the base of the tail. Both also have a dark patch on the dorsal fin. When compared side by side, Corydoras julii tends to be more delicate in build and the pattern of spots is much finer, with each spot being quite distinct. Corydoras trilineatus is more robust in build and the spots commonly form squiggles and bars. For more information see the description section below.
