Description
The Cryptoheros Honduran Red Point is a stunning cichlid that has recently become available in the UK. It is thought to be a distinct species from the Convict cichlid, Cryptoheros nigrofasciatus, but this has not yet been confirmed. The fish is characterised by its bright red colouration at the base of the caudal peduncle and fins, which gives it its name.
The Honduran Red Point is not particularly fussy about water conditions, but it does prefer moderately hard, alkaline water. It is a relatively small fish, reaching a maximum size of around 8cm. Sexing the fish is fairly easy when they are over about 6cm in length, as the males are larger and have more pronounced red colouration.
The Honduran Red Point is a peaceful fish that can be kept in a community tank with other similarly sized cichlids. However, it is important to provide plenty of hiding places, as the fish can be territorial at times.
