Semaprochilodus taeniurus, also known as the Silver Prochilodus or Fei Feng, is an ecologically and biologically interesting species. It migrates over large distances in huge shoals, playing a vital role in maintaining ecosystem dynamics by processing organic sediments. It has a detritivorous feeding habit and two stomachs, one of which aids digestion by storing mud.

Description
Semaprochilodus taeniurus, Flagtail Characin, migrates and spawns in river channels but predominantly feeds in floodplains. They can also be found in floodplain lakes (known locally as “várzeas”) and forest streams.
This species is adaptable regarding decor, but for a natural setup, consider a biotope arrangement. Utilise river sand substrate, driftwood branches (common beech can be used if thoroughly dried and stripped of bark), and twisted roots. Algal growth is beneficial as the fish graze on it. Avoid soft-leaved plants as they will be devoured.
Primarily herbivorous, provide vegetable matter such as blanched spinach, lettuce, cucumber, courgette, and algae wafers. They also accept high-quality dried foods and small frozen fare like bloodworms.
Can be aggressive towards its own kind in small numbers but can be kept in groups of six or more in larger tanks. Suitable tankmates include other large characins, Loricariids, Doradids, peaceful cichlids, knifefish, arowana, and freshwater stingrays.
