The tank should be well-planted with plenty of hiding places for the Tyre Track Eel to hide away and with sand and substrate as they like to bury themselves. Be aware that the eel can find its way through small gaps so a close-fitting hood is required. Water flow should be fairly gentle.

Description
The Tyre Track Eel (Mastacembelus favus) is also known as the Zig-Zag eel, the tyre-track spiny eel or marbled spiny eel. It is a species of ray-finned, spiny eels belonging to the genus Mastacembelus, native to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and other parts of South East Asia. Other common names for this popular aquarium species include leopard spiny eel and white-spotted spiny eel.
They are nocturnal fish that thrive in streams, wetlands, still waters, coastal marshes and rivers with sandy or rocky riverbeds and heavy vegetation. They are known to be bottom dwellers, substrate diggers and burrowers and require an adequate size aquarium to accommodate their size. Tyre track eels are likely to prey upon smaller fish and mixing them with fish belonging to the same species is not advisable as they are aggressive to members of the same fish family. They are peaceful to other fish species with similar care level requirements, size and temperament, such as gouramis, danios, loaches, Loricariids, and Asian catfish.
