A very attractive species, having a bright, yellow-brown coloured body thickly covered in bold, dark brown irregular stripes and spots. Colours remain intense throughout the life of the fish.

Peckoltia Compta L134 (Leopard Frog Plecos) have dark-coloured bodies with yellow stripes that run along their entire body. They are an omnivorous species that prefers insect larvae and other meaty foods but will eat some green stuff including algae, vegetables and soft-leaved aquarium plants. Peckoltia are territorial but can be kept in groups if provided with sufficient space. a “plot of land” about 30cm by 30cm should be adequate for each fish and ideally keep either singly or in groups of three or more. Males have bristly odontodes on the pectoral fins and front half of the body, which females lack. This feature will only be obvious on mature specimens. Has been bred in aquaria, and spawns in a cave in much the same way as Ancistrus spp.
As the fish mature, the bright yellow stripes on their body tends to turn darker. As they mature, the stripe pattern tends to turn into spots as well. They have small compact bodies and long fins that are partially translucent at the ends.
Male and Female Leopard Frog Pleco look similar, but it is possible to tell the difference. As they mature, males develop tooth-like structures, but they do not function as teeth whereas females will have a wider body shape. While identifying the difference between a male and female will be difficult as juveniles, it does become easier as they mature.
These fish are indigenous to South America, often found in Rio Tapajos and Rio Tomo of Brazil. Typically found to be perched on driftwood or rock, with their fins flowing with the current.
While they are small, they have a captivating appearance and are a popular aquarium fish among many fish keepers.
