The most popular algae-eating shrimp is the Amano shrimp, Caridina japonica. This subtropical species is from Japan and has been popularised by noted aquarium designer Takashi Amano as the ideal algae eater for the “Nature Aquarium”. The Amano shrimp is essentially transparent with a few reddish-brown markings, grows to about 5 cm in length, and live for two to three years.

Description

Algae-eating shrimps, as their name suggests, feed primarily on green algae but they will also take any small particles of food they find. Suitable foods include algae wafers, soft vegetables such as spinach and courgette, and small frozen foods such as daphnia and bloodworms. Algae-eating shrimps are sociable and should be kept in “schools” of half a dozen specimens or more. When kept in smaller groups than this they become shy and often simply pine away. Algae-eating shrimps are probably the most delicate of all the freshwater shrimps, and should only be kept in mature, well-filtered aquaria. Almost all are from subtropical habitats, so take care that the water is well oxygenated and does not get too warm.

It can be bred in captivity, though the baby shrimps need to be raised in seawater and fed tiny live foods and algae. Amano shrimps naturally inhabit a variety of waters including slightly brackish salt marshes, and in captivity seem to be similarly adaptable.
