Description
The Barbus Fasciolatus, Barilioides Barb, is a delicate and timid species, best suited for quiet, mature softwater aquariums. Originating from heavily vegetated, slow-moving bodies of water with high oxygen content, these fish prefer dark decor and ample planting to mimic their natural habitat. Providing floating plants can help diffuse lighting. Peat filtration is recommended for maintaining soft, acidic water conditions, supplemented by bogwood and Indian Almond Leaves to release tannins. Barilioides Barbs exhibit their best colours in tannin-stained water.
In captivity, they thrive in large groups of 10 or more individuals in tanks exceeding 3 feet in length. While loose shoaling is common, males may display territorial behaviour, necessitating ample hiding places and visual barriers to prevent aggression. Compatible tankmates include dwarf cichlids, small catfish, kuhli loaches, and other peaceful species.
Offer a varied diet comprising high-quality flake food, green/vegetable flakes, micropellets, and small frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, baby brineshrimp, daphnia, and cyclops.
