Introducing the Megalechis Thoracata, Hoplo Catfish, a resilient and sociable species suitable for community aquariums with medium-sized tankmates. Found across various South American countries, these catfish grow up to 15cm+ and thrive in temperatures between 18-28°C.
Best kept in groups of five or more, they require spacious tanks with soft sand substrate and ample hiding spots. Adaptable to a wide range of water conditions, they enjoy a diet of sinking catfish pellets and frozen foods.

They should be kept in groups of five or more due to their social nature, mimicking their natural congregating behaviour. It’s crucial to monitor for signs of pairing and spawning, as males become territorial and aggressive during breeding. Juveniles can thrive in a 4ft long aquarium, but adults require more space.
A soft sand substrate is recommended to protect their long sensory barbels, along with ample hiding spots among decorations like bogwood, rocks, and sturdy plants. These catfish are known for their digging behavior, so ensure tank structures are secure. Dim lighting or diffused light with floating plants is preferred, and a blue moonlight tube is recommended for nocturnal viewing.
Proper maintenance, including regular water changes, is essential for their well-being. They thrive in well-oxygenated water with sufficient current.
Suitable tankmates include medium-sized barbs, large Rainbowfish, Devario species, medium-sized Tetras, Rasboras, Severum cichlids, and others.
Offer sinking catfish pellets, granules, or tablets as primary food sources. Supplement their diet with frozen foods like mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, and chopped krill. Some individuals may consume flake or crisps, but sinking foods should be the main diet staple. During feeding, ensure food is distributed across multiple locations to prevent the Hoplo Catfish from monopolising the meal. They possess the ability to breathe air intestinally, so leave a small gap between the water surface and cover slides for them to access air.
