The Apistogramma cacatuoides, commonly known as the Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid, is a popular and colourful freshwater fish species among aquarium enthusiasts. The “double red” variety is a selectively bred variant of the Apistogramma cacatuoides, prized for its striking and vibrant red colouration.
These fish are native to South America, primarily found in slow-moving rivers and streams in the Amazon basin of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. They are part of the Cichlidae family, known for their intriguing behaviour and beautiful appearances.
The “double red” variation of Apistogramma cacatuoides is characterised by intense red and orange hues, particularly in the males. Males often exhibit elongated dorsal fins, which resemble the crest of a cockatoo, lending the species its common name. The females are less colourful and have shorter dorsal fins.
