The sailfin molly is a large, herbivorous livebearer that is available in a variety of artificial forms. The wild form is greenish-silver. Males have dramatically larger dorsal fins that they use to display to females.
These are natural inhabitants of coastal streams and benefit from the addition of a small amount of salt to the water. A specific gravity of 1.002 to 1.005 is ideal. They can be adapted to higher salinities as well, and even to fully marine conditions if required.
While they can be kept in fresh water, the pH and hardness levels must be high; in water that is acidic or soft, these fish are plagued with fungal infections, fin rot, and other unpleasant diseases.
